Thoughts For The New Year ~

I started doing this in 2008 and now its become a bit of a tradition, so here goes...
(p.s. some of this was written earlier in the day, and some of it later in the evening)

I'm feeling...So very lucky and fortunate to be surrounded by my awesome family!  Lucky for walking away from that accident yesterday, and fortunate that my family was there to swoop in and take care of us...picked us up from the scene, took us to their home, fed us dinner, and then took us home (to Christy's house).  They even loaned me a car so i won't have to worry about transportation for a while!  Uncle Jim, Aunt Gwen, Chad and Greg...Thank you sooo very much!  And to my Uncle Lynn for swinging by the next morning to take us to get the loaner car...you all had so many other things going on and you dropped them all to take care of us...you made me feel SPECIAL and LOVED too!

I'm seeing...a winter wonderland!  Everything looks so white and beautiful!  We drove home from Christy's in our loaner Honda Civic, and it was a gorgeous day!  It was below 0 when we were in our accident, so it was nice to drive home the next day in 25 degrees and lots of sunshine!  It actually felt toasty warm to us and we didnt even need our coats!  As i drove on I-25, i enjoyed following the gorgeous white capped mountains all the way to Fort Collins.  A lovely view indeed!

I'm thinking...about all our frozen pipes!  Thats right...before we left for the pot belly, it seems our main bathroom has some backed up frozen pipes!  The shower, the washing machine, the toilet and the sink are not draining!  doh!  But as Justin said...we are not going to think about that...we are going to go out and have fun, and worry about the pipes tomorrow!  So thats what im going to do!
Instead I will think about how this is my first NYE without Jordyn!  We usually all stay home, but this year I dropped her off at Grandma and Grandpa Bruens house in Fort Collins on my way home today.  I know she will have a blast with them, so Im not sad...just realized that this is a sign of things to come!  When my daughter will be too cool to spend her New Years with her parents, but instead will be going to spend it with friends instead!  She is growing up fast and I am so proud of her!

I'm appreciating...the fact that we all walked away from that accident!  I know i keep mentioning it, but it did just happen yesterday, so it's sort of number one on my mind right now!  I appreciate having a wonderful daughter and the best friend ever...two of my most favorite people in the world, safely walking away from that very scary car accident with me!  I consider yesterday to be one of the best days ever!

I'm cooking...NOTHING!  Tonight we are headed over to the Pot Belly!  Justin is playing some music there tonight with Lynn Johnson, Spook and a few others, so it should be fun!  We usually do a seafood feast up at Aunt LeAnns, but instead she will be joining us up at the pot belly too :)  In fact, i barely had time to get ready for the gig.  Got home at 6:15 and we are leaving at 6:45!  They have a special menu tonight...New York Strip, Salmon Fettucini Alfredo, or Pork Loin.  Gumbo soup, a salad, and shrimp cocktail for appetizers!  Im planning on the Salmon and Justins gonna have the steak!  And the best part...the band and their wives eat (and drink) for free!  A great way to kick off the new year! :)

I'm planning...To go home early tonight!  While im excited to be going somewhere for the first time in years for NYE, I am utterly exhausted from the high emotions that we experienced yesterday from the accident!  Part of me is really excited to climb in my own bed to sleep and part of me wants to share in Justins fun at the Pot Belly, so i will compromise and eat good food, listen to great music, and then go home early to get cozy by the fire and watch my NYE traditional movie, Trading Places!  :)

I'm reading...The Fiery Cross (book 5 in the Outlander series) by Diana Gabaldon.  I havent read any of her books in a while and i thought it would be fun.  Im about 1/2 way through the book though and growing tired of her story...it seems to be dragging, and i have several other books i would like to read, so im anxious to finish it and move on.  It does have some fun parts though!

I'm wearing
...Well, i was dressed in festive clothes for the pot belly gig...black jeans, a sparkly black top and my new scarf i got from Denise for Christmas (the one from Solvang), and the new earrings i purchased at the DAM.  But once i got home i quickly changed into some warm sweat pants and a sweatshirt (it was 3 degrees outside and only 58 inside, so it was chilly).  I always end up in sweatpants come midnight!  :)

I'm creating...lots of things, as usual!  I have several projects in the wings waiting for me, but school has kept me busy and i havent had much time to dedicate to them.  I am getting interested in jewelry making, and did find time to make a pair of earrings for someone for Christmas.  I would like to do more of that and have slowly been stocking up on supplies.  I really do love to work with my hands creating things for people!  I have a few miniature quilts to finish up, but those are for me, so it will be a while before i get to them.  Also, Santa put some water color paper in my stocking...so it would be nice if i could start painting again too!

I'm hearing...the band play Not Fade Away...one of my favorites, and the last song for me for the evening as i went home right after.  It was great to see some friends, have a great meal and then listen to the guys jam for a while, but i'm beat!  I am glad i got to hear that song before i left though!  :)

I'm enjoying...My job as a preschool teacher!  We have some terrific kids this year and i just love working with them!  Its wonderful to watch them learn and grow and all the hugs are an added bonus!  This being our second year, things are much easier and running smoother.  We have added some new things to the program that i am really proud of, and I cant ask for more than that!  Its great to go to work when you love your job!

I'm sharing...Some pictures of tonight's fun at the Pot Belly!  What a great night!  Happy New Year Everyone!!!

May 2015 fill your hearts with love, laughter, health and prosperity and bring peace to all!

Best Day of 2014!

Our car most likely got totaled in an accident a few hours ago (some one pulled out right in front of me...doh! fault and ticket went to him) Cops were awesome...investigator let us keep warm in his van and we all walked away from the incident!!! Got a ride from family and a loaner car from family all in a matter of minutes! So lucky and feeling very fortunate on this very cold ass night! Looks like i cashed in a few karma points tonight...i happily accept ~ Huge thanks to Chad, Jim, Gwen, and Greg for taking care of us tonight!!!

We are safe at home celebrating! But let me just say this...i prefer to be on the EMT side of an accident!

Brilliant: Cartier in the 20th Century ~

The DAM is hosting a world-exclusive exhibition of Brilliant: Cartier in the 20th Century, featuring stunning jewelry, timepieces, and precious objects created between 1900 and 1975.  Since we are members, we decided to go on a member Monday to check it out!  Forewarning...there will be loads of photos...and if you plan on going, beware of spoilers!
This is the first display you see when you walk into the exhibit and it is absolutely breathtaking!  The photo does not do it justice, but these diamonds glowed and sparkled from across the room.  The piece across the breast had little twisted leaves and the detail was spectacular!
Both of these crowns were gorgeous, and i accidentally left my nose print on the glass as i tried to get as close up as possible to take it all in.  Funny thing about that is its obvious im not the only one, since they have an employee that walks around the entire exhibit all day with windex in hand, just to clean the display cases.  She laughed and said it happens all day long!
In the early 1900's pearls were more valuable than diamonds, so jewelry with pearls in them were highly sought after.  In fact it is rumored that the Cartier building in New York was purchased with two strands of pearls.  The vine work on this crown is actually black onyx, making it a very unique piece.
These three brooches were very contemporary in design for the time and they represent early art deco, which would explain why i like them so much.
This ribbon brooch was one of my favorite pieces in the exhibit...so delicate and lovely...it truly looked like a ribbon.
This bracelet was one of Christys favorites, and i have to admit, i loved it too.  It was so incredibly shiny that it was hard to photograph, but this shot does it some justice!  Be sure to click on the images to get a full size glimpse of each piece.
The exhibit was laid out in chronological order as well as keeping with styles and times.  There was an India, Egypt and Asian room, as well as an Art of Smoking area and Men's Design section.  Each one as amazing as the next.  The exhibit was so well done, the attention to detail exhibiting the pieces and decorating the rooms was lovely!  The Denver Art Museum really outdid themselves with this show.

Included alongside many pieces were their original sketches and designs, which were almost as lovely as the pieces themselves.

The discovery of King Tut's tomb brought a new found fascination with Egypt and all its treasures, and Egyptian revival began.  Cartier designers tried to emulate the Egyptian style by using similar stones and materials the Egyptians would have used. (with a Cartier flair of course)
In fact he often used Egyptian antiquities combined with his designs to create something new like this blue scarab with wings.
There were several vanity cases in the exhibit too...but this one was my favorite!  The mother of pearl and onxy stripes on the back are really striking and the design itself of the panther is beautiful too! The mini lipsticks that came with these cases were also created by Cartier.

There were many clocks on display, but the mystery clocks fascinated me most!  I included the information here so you can learn how they work, but another thing i found interesting was that it could take up to a year to complete just one mystery clock...and i can see why!

Celebrities and socialites were often adorned with Cartier jewelry, and they often worked with designers to commission personal pieces too.  Sometimes they even brought their own stones to work with.  Actors would often wear their personal jewelry in movies too.
"All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up." Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard.  :)

This simple design was made for Marlene Dietrich, and if you look closely, you can see the engraving.

Many of the displays had images of the celebrities wearing the items, which was fun to see how they looked on them.  This particular chunky emerald necklace of Oberon's was ginormous hanging around her neck, and it was lovely!

This colorful style of jewelry was called Tutti Fruiti, and i loved it!  All the gems combined together with carvings within some of the stones, made the jewelry very playful and fun!  Even the detail of the string tassel clasp is lovely!

Daisy Fellowes also had a beautiful Tutti Fruiti necklace in her display case!

This bird brooch is almost 6 inches long, and the colorful sparkles that gleamed off of this bird were amazing!
In the middle of the exhibit there was a section with several desks like this one...each one sharing how a particular part of the design process was done.  In this station, Jordyn is learning about metal polishing.  There was also a design station, a stone cutting and polishing station and a casting station. (Cartier makes casts of all of its designs).

Another neat thing we learned was that no one knew where the designers lived, because they would take the stones home and work on them in their own studios, so no one new their addresses to prevent theft.

This leopard bracelet was very pretty!  The tail actually wraps around the wrist and clasps in the paw and the head was made to swivel left or right.

I liked the combination of stones in this necklace, you dont usually see amethyst and turquoise together, but they compliment each other well.  It also looks even prettier in the photo on the Duchess.
These next two pieces are from the Palais Princier de Monaco collection and they were once worn by Grace Kelly.

The engagement ring was so sparkly that it was difficult to photograph, so this was the best i could do.  But you get to see a few other pieces from the Monaco collection in this photo as well :)
These are photographs of the Cartier storefront after the historic moon landing!

Each of the Apollo 11 astronauts were given one of these replicas, however, it is reported that one of the models is badly damaged because the astronaut let his kids play with it :)  They didnt say which astronaut though!
These alligators could be displayed separately or together as a necklace. The two crocodile bodies were made of gold, one covered with 1,023 yellow diamonds, while the other was adorned with 1,060 circular cut emeralds.  This piece along with the snake necklace were commisioned by the famous Mexican actress and jewelry connoisseur, Maria Felix.
This completely articulated serpent is made out of platinum and white gold and is encrusted with 178.21 carats of diamonds.  WOW!
And here we are in the gift shop showing off our rings that Jordyn picked out for us!  What a fantastic show!!!
Cartier Jewelers do not use computers in any of their design process.  Everything is done by hand, just like it was 100 years ago, making them unique to most designers today.  Their dedication and skill and techniques make their jewelry true works of art!  When i first came to this exhibit, i knew it would be fun, but i really didnt think it would overwhelm me the way it did!  This was an extraordinary show!
After our museum adventures we always pop in to Pints Pub for some lunch and cocktails!  We love this place...the atmosphere is cozy and the food is great!  The bloody mary's arent too shabby either :)

It was an incredibly cold day, but we had a blast!  It was BRILLIANT!  :)
