Rustic Fire and more crazy quilting...

On June 1st, at 2:57am, my pager went off. There was smoke reported at the Rustic Resort. As an EMT, we respond to structure fires, to make sure our fire fighters are safe and hydrated. Other EMT's had responded to the scene, so i stayed home. Then another page..."flames were visible at Rustic". My phone rang..."Lisa if you want any photos of the Rustic, you better get down here now...its burning to the ground." I hopped in the car and photographed what was left of the resort. This resort has been around for many years, and at one time, Jordyns grandma and great grandma owned and operated it. In fact, most of the canyon folks up here have worked here at one time or another, including myself. You could say, it was rather famous for these parts, so it was truly sad to see it burn down. Once on scene, i was asked to take over as EMT lead, as our other EMT responder had to leave...so, needless to say, i was now grounded at the scene for the next 8 hours. I handed out water and made sure our fire fighters were rotating shifts. All of our fire fighters are volunteers, and most are over 60, so its important to make sure everyone took breaks. The wives and neighbors of the fire fighters were wonderful and brought large thermoses of coffee, water, lemonade, as well as, sandwiches, pastries, cookies, and breads. Folks in small towns really are the best! Anyways, im happy to report that no one was injured, and that everyone went home safe (although extremely exhausted).
Interestingly enough, the resort sign, an icon of the canyon, still remains. All in all, it was a busy weekend for EMS...4 MVA's, 1 hiking injury, and a fire...looks like summer has arrived!

As for my creative efforts... i finished two more crazy quilt squares for the swap on about.com.

Two more cream and white squares, one with sage and soft plum accents, and the other with just gold and white accents. Six down and only three more to go! Then i can get back to work on my ALQS quilt...after that im taking a break from swaps to get caught up on all my unfinished projects :)

It's very sad when small communities loose landmarks, especially places that are so close to many hearts. Glad to see that everyone is ok.

Your crazy patch looks very very light and dainty.

How did the fire start? I hope it wasn't deliberate. Shame that something which takes so long to build can be destroyed so quickly. Your crazy blocks are looking so elegant!
